Using motion sensors, the fan captures movement data from Shimai (short solo Noh dances) and links it to music, creating a responsive, embodied experience. The project began with gesture-based audio triggering but evolved into a broader inquiry: how can traditional performance be archived and shared through low-cost, portable tools? Drawing from traditional Noh aesthetics and digital sensing technologies, the project proposes an alternative model of dance archiving, one that is lightweight, individualized, and performative. It challenges centralized, institutional methods by offering a tool for solo dancers to document and interact with their own movement. The term "Social Death/社死 (shè sǐ)" is often used on Chinese social media to describe the extreme awkwardness when someone behaves in an embarrassing manner. "SSDA" is a one-act comedy that explores those awkward moments in college life and the transition to adulthood. Social standards around the body are often unspoken, yet deeply internalized. Feeling comfortable in one’s own body can itself become a question. Feeling Normal was developed through a research-based performance-making process focused on the bodily experiences of young Chinese adults in their twenties, particularly women. As the dramaturg, I interviewed more than 20 people from different social and professional backgrounds, including fitness coaches, members of the queer community, and young women who had experienced military-style training. Alongside the interviews, we held public workshops, creating a space for participants to share and examine their own experiences of bodily norms. An ensemble of seven Chinese-American actresses portrays the devisers who helped bring the show to life, walking through their individual experiences as women who have lived in both China and the West.
